Are there any medical or surgical treatments for hearing loss?
Your audiologist will be able to tell if there is a medically treatable condition needing the attention of an otolaryngologist (ear specialist). Some causes of hearing loss can be treated through medications, surgery, or simply removing ear wax. However, approximately 90% of all hearing loss is not medically or surgically treatable
How do I know if I need a hearing aid?
There are several things to consider when determining the need for hearing aids including degree and type of hearing loss, any medical conditions, and the demands put on your hearing. The first step is to seek assistance from an Audiologist. While the extent of the difficulties you are having hearing is important, the best way to find out if you need a hearing aid is get a thorough hearing evaluation from an audiologist. Your audiologist will be able to tell you if you will benefit from hearing aids. Of course, the final decision of whether you need a hearing aid is yours. If you are having difficulties hearing you should find the use of hearing aids beneficial.
What is the process for being fit with hearing aids?
The first step is a thorough hearing evaluation. Once this has been completed your audiologist will look at several factors, in consultation with you, before making a recommendation as to the best hearing aid(s) for you. Issues such as the degree and configuration of hearing loss, word recognition ability, life style, cosmetic concerns, dexterity, motivation, cost, and expectations will be discussed.
A decision will then be made as to the type and style of hearing aid. The amount of benefit that you can hope to achieve from amplification is dependent on the severity and nature of the hearing loss. The hearing aid fitting and evaluation is the means by which your audiologist strives to successfully fit you with a hearing aid(s) and to achieve your personal hearing goals.
This hearing aid fitting process includes the selection and evaluation of the hearing aid as well as an extensive follow up service. This is an important process as there will be an adjustment period as you learn to use your hearing aid and cope with the extra sounds you will experience.
Your feedback at the follow up appointments, whether it is good or bad, is important. Fine tuning of the hearing aid after the initial period is necessary in most cases to ensure the hearing aid is appropriate for your individual needs.
How much do hearing aids cost?
Hearing aid costs vary widely depending on the style and technology selected. It is difficult to state a price since it varies so much.
Will my insurance pay for hearing aids?
More and more insurances are beginning to offer assistance with hearing aids. Nevertheless, most do not including Medicare. If you are in need of a hearing aid and are unable to afford one, there are other ways to get the funding needed. Speak with your Audiologist or call the Center and speak to the receptionist. Both are very knowledgeable in other sources for assistance with purchasing hearing aids.
How effective are hearing aids?
Today's hearing aids are unmistakably better suited to treat hearing loss than ever before. Digital technology has led to better circuitry and “smarter” hearing aids that are more easily customized to fit your hearing needs. Today's hearing aids are effectively mini-computers on your ear that are constantly sampling the environment in order to “adjust” and maximize your hearing. Many hearing aids now have the capability of connecting via Bluetooth technology to telephones, cell phones, and televisions. Like the old car commercial said “This is not your father's Oldsmobile” – this is not your father's hearing aids.
Is there a trial period for hearing aids purchased at the Center? What fees are non-refundable if the hearing aids are returned at the end of the trial period?
All hearing aids purchased through Pee Dee Speech & Hearing Center have a 60 day trial period. Typically there will be a minimal fee for returning the hearing aids to cover the cost of the audiologists' time, restocking fees, and programming time.
